Indian Women Paid Less Than Men for Same Jobs! | TOI

Shocking as it might be, India stands at rock bottom in the list of countries when it comes to gender equality, and that includes pay parity! This revelation was made by the Global Gender Gap Report of 2010.

India ranked lowest among the BRIC countries viz. Brazil, Russia, India and China. In fact, statistics showed that the average annual income of an Indian working woman was less than one-third that of an Indian man!

Gender bias
“A woman is paid a lesser salary than a man due to the assumption that a woman will not put in as many hours of work as a man will! This assumption primarily drives employers to believe that a man deserves a higher pay than his female counterpart at a given post.” says Albino Mascarenhas, Head of HR at a media firm.

Top 10 Gay Indian Films | Times Of India |TNN

Number 10)

Dunno Y… Na Jaane Kyon (2010): Though this film directed by Sanjay Sharma was screened at various international film festivals, it disappeared from our multiplexes soon after its release. It apparently features the first gay kiss (between Aryan Vaid and Kapil Sharma) in Indian cinema.

Watch it because: of the accolades it’s won, including praise for one of the actors Yuvraaj Parashar, by the state’s Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal for his sensitive portrayal of a gay character.

Number 9) Dostana (2008):

Close on the heels of Fashion, came another film starring Priyanka Chopra along with Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham, who pretend to be gay.

Watch it because: Produced by a banner that was once synonymous with fluttering saris on the Swiss Alps, this was one of the first films to have two of Bollywood’s biggest stars play (wannabe) gay characters.

SRK busy for Yash Chopra

Shah Rukh Khan fans have to wait for his next romantic flick which will be directed by Yash Chopra.

It is believed that the film has been postponed to December, thanks to his involvement in the ongoing IPL and his home production Ra.One. After IPL, Shah Rukh will be busy in the aggressive marketing and promotions of Ra.One, which releases in October. His Don 2 will be releasing in December too thus he will need time for its promotions as well.

According to a resource, Yash Chopra who is back to direction after 7 years wants SRK to focus only on one project dedicatedly. Thus the film will commence on December 15 th . Very few know that YRF considers 6 as their lucky number thus the date 15 (1 + 5 = 6) has been chosen to kickstart the project.

This untitled romantic flick will bring Shah Rukh and Katrina Kaif together for the first time.

Ness, Preity patch up

Ness Wadia and Preity Zinta kept their distance from each other after their split two years ago.

It was only natural. However, as they are also business partners (co-owners of the IPL team) they remained cordial. The interaction was more formal than friendly. But that has changed now. They are over the awkward phase after a break-up and have been ready to be friends again. The duo were spotted partying. They seemed totally relaxed and comfortable in each other's company. They have also been hanging out with mutual friends, which they'd stopped doing after they parted ways. Says an insider, "Things had become weird for a while. They'd decided to make a joint statement of their break-up, but things didn't go as planned. Preity was at a party when she was asked about Ness' whereabouts. Known to be frank, the actress blurted out that she had no clue. This instantly aroused the curiosity of her friends who were present and Preity admitted to them that she and Ness weren't dating anymore.

IPL 4: Malinga most valuable, Valthaty best bargain

Lasith Malinga is the most valuable player (MVP) of IPL 4 so far, beating emerging star Paul Valthaty to second place by just a bit.

When it comes to value for money (VFM), however, the Malayali from Mumbai who's making waves for Kings XI Punjab is streets ahead of all competition.

Behind Malinga and Valthaty in the MVP list are Johan Botha, Robin Uthappa and Doug Bollinger. Sachin Tendulkar heads the second half of the top 10 with Virat Kohli, Kumar Sangakkara, Yusuf Pathan and Jesse Ryder rounding it off.

None of these names, apart of course from Valthaty, makes it anywhere close to the top 10 in the VFM list. That's not surprising given that most of them count their annual fees in millions of dollars while uncapped Indian players like the Kings XI opener have to make do with a maximum of $50,000.

The others on the VFM list are, therefore, predictably local players who have more than pulled their weight for their squads. At No. 2 is Rahul Sharma, followed by Ambati Rayudu, Iqbal Abdulla and Sunny Sohal, in that order. The second half of the top 10 consists of Siddharth Trivedi, Ashok Menaria, Amit Singh, M S Bisla and A G Murtaza.

How have we arrived at these names? A fair bit of number crunching went into it, involving assigning points for batting, bowling, fielding and captaincy on the basis of objective parameters, not subjective opinion, to construct an MVP index.

Google gets approval for $900-million bid for Nortel patents

Toronto, May 3 Google Monday got the approval for its $900-million bid to buy about 6,000 patents and patent applications from failed Canadian telecom giant Nortel.
Estimated to be worth over $1 billion, Nortel's patent portfolio touches nearly every aspect of telecommunications and additional markets as well, including Internet search and social networking.
Canadian and US bankruptcy courts Monday set June 20 as the auction date, with Google starting the bidding process with its $900-million bid. Other bidders can submit their offers by June 13.
BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) has already expressed its desire to acquire the patent portfolio elated to cutting-edge, next-generation wire technology.

Facebook 'to be worth $100b by next spring'

London, May 3 (ANI): Facebook's earnings are growing faster than the company had predicted in 2010, leading to speculation that it could be worth as much as 100billion dollars by next spring.
The Wall Street Journal, citing people who have seen Facebook's recent financial information, reports that the company is likely to earn more than $2billion in 2011, raising the possibility of it going public in spring 2012.
It would make Facebook one of the biggest technology companies in the world, overtaking Amazon and Cisco, reports the Daily Mail.
That estimate puts its profits far above the numbers Facebook released in January 2011 when Goldman Sachs and Russian investment firm Sky Technologies invested 1.5billion dollars in the firm.
The terms of their investment implied it could be worth as much as 50 billion dollars.
Facebook's rapid growth has fuelled a scramble among investors to buy shares in the company while it remains private.
Much of its success is down to its huge advertising revenue, which is predicted to hit 4.05billion dollars this year, up from 1.86billion dollars in 2010, according to EMarketer.
It has also made extra money from its own payments system, called Credits, for which it takes a 30 percent cut.

Tech CEOs visit Washington to lobby for H1B visa, tax reforms

Yahoo.com
Lalit K Jha Washington, Mar 11 (PTI) More than 60 CEOs from Silicon Valley have descended on Washington to meet lawmakers and members of the Obama Administration and apprise them on issues facing the technology sector, in particular H-1B visa and tax reforms.
TechNet, a bipartisan policy and political network of CEOs for promoting the growth of the innovation economy, said in a statement that it supports a complete overhaul of the nation''s highly skilled immigration system to better reflect the realities of today''s global economy.
This could be achieved "by increasing the number of H-1B visas available to foreign-born workers, speeding up the employment-based green card application process and ensuring that foreign-born students who graduate with advanced degrees from US colleges and universities are able to stay in the country instead of sending home to US competitors," it said.

India''s economic rise is benefitting US: Obama

Yahoo.com
Lalit K Jha Washington, Apr 25 (PTI) A top Obama aide has said that the US is benefitting from the economic rise of India and the accelerating trade relationship between the two nations is mutually beneficial and relatively balanced.
"The incredible growth of Indias economy has resulted in positive spillover effects for the United States.
A quick look at the data reveals a trade relationship that is accelerating, mutually beneficial, and relatively balanced," said Robert Blake, the Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia.
Blake in his address to the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton India Economic Forum, said that the US exports to India have grown faster than exports to practically all other countries in the world.
Between 2002 and 2009, the US exports to India have quadrupled, growing from USD 4.1 billion in 2002 to more than USD 16.4 billion in 2009. Also, during the period, its services'' exports to India more than tripled, increasing from USD 3.2 billion in 2002 to more than USD 9.9 billion in 2009.
While noting that India was the country''s 12th largest trading partner in goods, Blake said recently-released trade data for 2010 showed record goods trade with India, wherein the US exports to India rose by 17 percent while its imports from India rose by 40 percent.

US Congress up in arms against Pakistan

Lawmakers in the United States are up in arms against Pakistan with a Congressman announcing a decision to introduce legislation to bar all aid to Islamabad till it demonstrated that it had no inkling of bin Laden's whereabouts.
The Pakistan Foreign Aid Accountability Act would require the State Department to certify to Congress that Pakistan was not providing a sanctuary for the world's most wanted terrorist. "Pakistan has a lot of explaining to do. It seems unimaginable that Osama bin Laden was living 1,000 yards away from a military base in a million dollar mansion built especially for him and no one in the Pakistani government knew about it. I don't buy it," said Congressman, Ted Poe from Texas, who is proposing the legislation.
His steps comes as a anti-Pakistan mood prevailed on the Capitol Hill with a significantly large number of Congressmen and Senators believing that the Monday's special forces operation in Abbottabad had exposed the double game of the Pakistani government.

Watch out for these beauties

TOI:--
Days before the finale of the pageant, the contestants of Pantaloons Femina Miss India 2011 managed to take time out from their tough schedule and visited the Tissot boutique at Palladium Mall, Mumbai.

Each of the contestants was mesmerised by the range and like any watch connoisseur, took a lot of time to finalise the one that suits them best from their shortlisted selection. Trying on three wrist, contestant Kriti said, "I love big dials so I shortlisted Sea Touch, Visodate and PRC 200. Now I am confused whether to go with the minimalism of Visodate or the chrono look of PRC 200, but I guess it is the tactile technology of Sea Touch that I will settle for."

Meanwhile, contestant Ridhima was busy looking for delicate time-pieces. "While I choose Lady Heart for its see-through movement, I would recommend T Evocation and GenerosiT for those who like simple designs," she said.

Founded in 1853 at Le Locle, the birthplace of Swiss watchmaking, Tissot is a part of the world's largest watch conglomerate, The Swatch Group. It's already demonstrated its commitment and excellence through its deep involvement in sports and partnership with champions such as Indy car driver Danica Patrick, MotoGP biker Nicky Hayden, footballer Michael Owen and actress Deepika Padukone.

The brand associated itself with PFMI 2011 as Official Timekeeper. For these ladies, it was all about making the right move at the right time, and what better companion than a Tissot watch that is synonymous with perfection, innovation, legacy and style?

Dilhi ki hasleen kudi

When someone wins the title of Pantaloons Femina Miss India Earth, and comes back to her city, you'd expect a grand welcome at the airport from family and friends. But that didn't happen with Hasleen Kaur.

She gave her family a surprise by coming to Delhi a day in advance, and only told her dad at the last minute. "I had to watch the telecast of PFMI with my family and nobody else," she said.

She relived the moment with her relatives and friends while watching the pageant, and this time, crowned herself as Nicole Faria crowned her on TV!

After the excitement and jubilation had abated a bit, she went to the Golden Temple in Amritsar with her parents, and that was followed by a party in Delhi Cantt, where we clicked these pics. As soon as her school's principal, Meeta Rai, came to the party, she gushed, "Arre, look at her – Miss India! Chhoti si gudiya thi jab mere paas aayi thi."

Six body signs you shouldn't ignore

Yahoo.com:          There is more hair in your comb than on your head. Your new denims can’t stay buttoned up for long and irritating dust particles float in your eyes. You panic thinking that some dreaded disease has hit you and search the Internet for a quick fix. The search results in ten different diseases and you are not sure which one is more severe. Sounds familiar? Relax. With the help of health experts, we list few unknown symptoms (and solutions) which may strike women.

Rebound headaches:
Like heartache, rebound headaches refuse to go. They keep coming back even after you have popped in a few painkillers. Well don’t blame the headache, the culprit here is the pill. Overuse of medication makes the body resistant to its effects. When they don’t work as well, people take stronger doses of the medication. This continues to desensitize the body, triggering yet another rebound headache.

William And Kate Wedding

NEWLYWED Prince William starts back at work today as his dad Charles struggles to recover from the partying.
The prince, 28, and new wife Kate, 29, returned to their cottage in Anglesey, north Wales, after a post-wedding weekend understood to have been spent at Windsor Castle.
Meanwhile, Charles, 62, was back at work - but having trouble because he had lost his voice.
During a visit to the revamped Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, where a crowd of 350 were waiting, he revealed the battering his health had taken.
When well-wisher Andrew Mosley, 23, from Solihull, asked him how he was, the father of the groom laughed and croaked: "Actually, I lost my voice after the party."
At his son's Buckingham Palace wedding reception for 650 friends, family and foreign royals on Friday afternoon, Charles made a speech which included several jokes about William's bald spot.
He chatted away to Kate's family and the newlyweds' friends until after midnight on Friday night, when he and Camilla were driven off by Princess Anne. But, despite his tender vocal cords, the prince told crowds he enjoyed the wedding day.
Royal fan Karen Reid said: "We said we had enjoyed it very much and he said he had enjoyed it as well."
William and Kate were staying firmly out of the spotlight yesterday.
The new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are hoping for a low-key start to married life on Anglesey, where William is based as an RAF search and rescue pilot.
Courtiers plan to ease Kate into royal life with just a few public appearances in her early years.
Mowing So far, the only trip that has been announced is a week-long visit to Canada at the beginning of July.
The bride's family also settled back into normal life over the weekend after their days in the limelight.
Kate's dad Michael, 61, changed his designer suit for gardening gloves and jeans as he set about mowing the lawn of the family's Bucklebury home.
Meanwhile, Prince William's aides yesterday denied reports he would be leaving his new wife for a 10-week work stint in September.
A Clarence House spokeswoman said: "There are no plans for the Duke of Cambridge to deploy to the Falklands in September."

Imran's 'oral' skills!

TOI:   The actor has shot for a sex scene in his upcoming film Delhi Belly. For the first time ever in a Hindi film, an actor is shown going under the covers, and down on his girl. So far the intimate scenes usually meant the guy-on-top, but Imran Khan has dared to go 'down.'

No B-Town actor has done this before. A source from the unit confirms, "Yes, Imran has shot for the said scene with his on-screen girlfriend. This is the boldest scene he has done. Obviously, it is all under the covers, but you cannot miss the implication. I think even that is very daring by Bollywood standards." Imran confirms having done the scene but doesn't want to go into the details.

Ranbir Ranbir dating Kingfisher Calendar Girl! | Angela Jonsson

While half the female population of the country swoons over Ranbir Kapoor day in and day out, here's one girl who has monopolised the actor's attention and needless to say, free time.

Just yesterday, we told you how the young Kapoor was spotted at a city nightspot with a pretty young thing. Today, we tell you who the girl was.

After Sonam Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif and Nargis Fakhri, who by the way has returned to the US of A, Ranbir Kapoor has been inseparable, if only for the last 15 days, with Angela Jonsson.

Angela Jonsson, if you remember, was the winner of the Kingfisher Calendar Girl 2011 Hunt.

Even Siddhartha Mallya, owner of Kingfisher Airlines, who is now dating Ranbir's ex Deepika Padukone, had once said about this 20-year-old girl, "She is a stunningly good-looking girl. She is a very sweet person and she radiates all that Kingfisher stands for."

A source told us, "The girl with Ranbir at Aer Bar was Angela. She was not only dressed in an understated dress as correctly mentioned by you in your story, but even her make-up was very light, just lipgloss."

Though, how Ranbir met Angela still remains a mystery, their growing friendship is definitely the talk of B-Town. "A few days ago, they were together at Anushka Sharma's birthday party, which was attended by a few select people. Sometime ago, they were also seen at the lounge bar Prive in Colaba," revealed the source.

The 5'8", 48 kilo Angela, born to Mangalorean mother and Icelandic father, aspires to make it big in Bollywood. For now, however, she has simply bought an apartment in Bandra not too far from Ranbir's Pali Hill bungalow, Krishna Raj.

Apart from going out with Ranbir every other day or rather night, the girl is learning Indian and Western dance forms. She is also improving on her Hindi. In fact, she is all set to enroll for a formal acting course.

China's Balancing Act:

Yahoo.com
In an official reaction, China hailed the killing of Osama bin Laden, calling it a "major event" in the fight against terrorism. However, in the next breath, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu defended its ally Pakistan from criticism that it has done little in the battle against terrorism. "Pakistan stands at the forefront of the international struggle against terrorism," Reuters quotes Jiang as saying. "The Pakistani government's determination to fight terrorism is staunch and its actions have been vigorous. Pakistan has made important contributions to the international struggle against terror. China will continue staunchly supporting Pakistan developing and implementing its own anti-terror strategy based on its own national conditions."

Osama Bin Laden is Dead

Nearly 10 years after the traumatic Sept 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon, the world's most wanted terrorist leader Osama bin Laden has been killed in Pakistan.
