Syria drops off the Internet

In what appears to be the latest bid by a government to throttle access to news and information amid growing civil unrest, the Syrian government Friday shut down all Internet services.

Internet monitoring firm Renesys reported that starting around 7 a.m. EDT today, close to two-thirds of all Syrian networks were suddenly unreachable from the global Internet.

In just 30 minutes, routes to 40 of 59 Syrian networks were withdrawn from the global routing table, said Renesys' chief technology officer, James Cowie, in a blog post.

The shutdown has affected all of SyriaTel's 3G mobile data networks, as well as several of the country's ISPs, such as Sawa, iNet and RunNet.

New Infosys sales head to face challenges | Infosys | Basad Pradhan

BANGALORE: As Basab Pradhan, a former company veteran, prepares to take over as sales head of Infosys, he faces challenges of increased competition from rivals such as Cognizant apart from visa abuse allegations in the top outsourcing market of US that threaten to dent the image of India's second biggest software exporter.

Pradhan posted a tweet confirming the development.

"I'm back at Infosys for a second innings. Last couple of days met/spoke to many old friends. Great feeling to be back. But lots to do," he said. At 45, Pradhan, who left Infosys in 2005 to start Gridstone Research, is perhaps going to face the toughest assignment of career, at a time when Infosys is trying to fend of rivals growing better, and is undergoing the biggest management rejig in its history.

"Basab Pradhan is not going to find this easy at all — Infosys now has ambitious, restless next line leaders who have grown their stature and the company itself is going through a strategic shift," said a former Infosys executive who has worked with Basab requesting anonymity.

An Infosys spokeswoman confirmed that Pradhan joined the company on June 1. ET Now reported on Pradhan joining back Infosys on May 27. The last time Pradhan took over as Infosys' sales head the company was trying to come out of a crisis with Phaneesh Murthy had resigned amid allegations of sexual impropriety.

Before he left Infosys in 2005 to launch his own venture, Pradhan handled global sales for the company and headed several key businesses like retail, consumer packages goods, healthcare and transportation.

Google chrome OS ready for sale in june | Android not merging with Chrome: Google

TAIPEI: Google Inc, the world's No. 1 Internet search engine, will keep the focus of its Chrome operating system on notebooks for now, a senior executive said.

Sundar Pichai, senior vice president for Chrome, made the comment at a news conference during the Computex PC show in Taipei in response to a question on whether Chrome would also be available for tablet PCs.

He also said the company had no current plans to merge Chrome with its Android system for mobile devices.

Web-centric PCs, made by Samsung and Acer Inc using Google's Chrome operating system will go on sale in June, as it challenges Microsoft Corp and Apple on their home turf.

The bare-bones operating system is essentially a web browser that steers users to use applications like email and spreadsheets directly on the web, instead of storing software such as Outlook or Word directly on PCs.

The fast-growing market for smartphones and tablets using Google's Android operating system has quickly taken center stage for the Internet heavyweight, and some observers say Google should reconcile or merge the two.

Why Apple taking the Cloud route?????

NEW YORK: Apple holds its annual developers' conference on June 6. As happened with previous new product introductions, like that of the iPad, the tech group's objective will be to trigger a virtuous circle whereby whatever new gadget it unveils tends to encourage consumers to buy other Apple products.

Expanding its cloud offerings, where data and programs are stored remotely, could set off more favorable feedback loops.

The company says Chief Executive Steve Jobs -- currently still on medical leave -- is addressing the crowd, and will talk about what it calls "iCloud." Characteristically, Apple is keeping its cards close to its chest.

But this appears a major effort into providing lots more music and computing services remotely via the Web, instead of being stored locally by the user. The company has built a 500,000 square foot data center in North Carolina and signed deals with multiple music labels in preparation with the launch.

Putting music, movies and other programs on the cloud offers a few obvious benefits to Apple. Its computers, tablets, and phones would potentially need less local memory. That means devices can be cheaper -- or simply higher margin -- yet slimmer and more attractive. That's important for the design-conscious Apple.

But the secondary effects are more important. If users store data and programs remotely, devices blend together. Buy a song once and it can be listened to on any gadget. Likewise, edit a spreadsheet on the cloud, and the changes can be seen and modified on multiple platforms. That makes customers more likely to stick with a suite of Apple products.

And there's an additional plus. Cloud services eat up bandwidth. Telecom companies are hungry for revenue from data transmission. That makes them more willing to subsidize iPhone sales in exchange for locking customers into long-term contracts. If Apple users start needing more expensive data plans, then companies like AT&T and Verizon are more likely to fund the purchase of Apple gadgets.

Apple revenue grew by 83 per cent in the last quarter. That must eventually slow. But its iCloud services halo affect could keep growth humming along a while longer.

Dad kills 20-yr-old for talking to boyfriend on cellphone | Girl killed for talking to boyfrinend on mobile

NAWADA: In yet another gory instance of honour killing, a quack strangled his 20-year-old daughter to death, doused the body with kerosene and burned it before burying it in a pit after he caught her red-handed talking to her boyfriend on cellphone, at Kutri village under the Nawada district's Warisaliganj police station area on May 7.

Police said Archana Singh, a BA part II student, was having an affair with classmate Suman Singh ever since the two studied in Intermediate at SN Sinha College. Belonging to same caste, they wanted to tie the knot but the girl's father was opposed to it as he thought the boy's family was inferior to his. The boy's father, Nand Lal Singh, has retired as a head electrician of the state power board.

The girl's boyfriend has her heart-rending screams recorded on his cellphone. However, he could not muster the courage to approach police.

The killing came to light on Thursday after the girl's father, accompanied by fellow villagers, made an abortive bid to kill the boy at his residence at Mularchak, 100 metres from the Warisaliganj ps, on Wednesday evening. "If I could kill my 'own flesh and blood', I would not spare you as well," Ashok Singh was quoted as having shouted outside the boy's house. However, he and his men ran away after the boy's father fired two rounds in the air from his licensed gun to save his son's life.

Suman lodged an FIR on Thursday. A Warisaliganj police officer Suresh Singh told TOI on Friday that following an anonymous phone call that a girl was being burned around 10pm on May 7, he along with forces had gone to the village around 11pm. They, however, returned empty-handed as they could not locate the place.

Whistle-blowers rejoice! Salman is back and this time he's ditched his belt to fiddle inside his pant pockets (read: Dhinka Chika, in case you don't have a television set at home). The thing with Salman's films is that they're in a genre of their own. A genre that cannot be graded for the story, screenplay, performances or any other metric used to evaluate other films. They can just be enjoyed or suffered, depending upon the elasticity of your tolerance. I hope you would consider this vague disclaimer before reading this review and before going to watch this monsoon musical.

Style it up with scarves | Yahoo.com

I tend to look at clothes as ‘foundation' for a look. The accessories are what really turn an outfit into a complete look with a unique style. Through my college years, my accessory mania took the form of jewelery, ranging from earrings to medallions, necklaces, anklets, rings and belts. When I started working, most of it had to be put away as it was too funky/ impractical/ irreverent/ inappropriate for office wear.
That's when I discovered another accessory - a simple length of cloth. It started with knotting a colourful scarf around my neck to break up the monotony of my office garb of drab shirt and grey trousers. That's when the world of folds, drapes, knots and related appointments like brooches & pins opened up to me.
Salwar-kameezes found a place in my wardrobe around the same time and from that direction, I came to the Indian version of scarves. Dupattas, such an integral part of Indian dressing, lend themselves to so many ways of wear, spanning the range from flirty to pragmatic, modest to seductive and accessorial to pragmatic. They add character to the clothes you wear.
Call it a stole, call it scarf or a bandana or a dupatta, the versatility of an extra piece of cloth cannot be emphasized enough. I love mixing up the conventional and this accessory allows me the freedom to do so without stumbling into inappropriate. For a bohemian look, I sometimes sport a regular cotton dupatta as a stole. What is usually known as a stole can be creatively knotted and fluffed up the front of a plain tee-shirt to make a fancy yoke. At the very least, a severe formal look can be offset by a soft, feminine (and saucy) scarf. While travelling around a polluted city, a scarf is a great way to keep the dust off your face and your hair, tangle-free.

Opera unveils new browser for iPhone, iPad | World's most used browser Opera

HELSINKI - Opera Software unveiled a new version of its mobile browser for Apple's iPhone and iPad on Tuesday.

Opera is the world's most used mobile browser ahead of Google's Android, Apple, and Nokia controlling 21.6 percent of the market in May so far, according to Web analytics firm StatCounter.

The Android, iPhone and Nokia browsers all have 16-17 percent market shares.

Opera's new browser features a share button, so users can post, tweet, or share info on Facebook, vKontakte or My Opera, the company said.

In April 2010 Apple accepted distribution of Opera's browser for its iPhone after a long review, opening a market it had closely guarded.

Opera's iPhone browser was downloaded more than 2.6 million times in 2010 April alone and was at the time the most popular application in many countries.

How to use skin essentials | How to use skin shop or fresh wash

But are so many products really neccessary? We help you decide which of those bottles and jars are really essential.

BODY WASH OR SOAP BAR

The idea of using a bar of soap when there are so many fancy bottles body wash lining the shelves is surely unfashionable.

But which is more effective? Promoters of liquid cleansers claim that these are gentler than bathing bars as they contain large amounts of petrolatum - an ingredient that moisturises and lubricates the skin.

Undoubtedly soap bars are more alkaline and have a dehydrating impact on the skin. " Body washes are a more convenient and hygienic option for bathing and they spread easily over the skin. They have hydrating and nourishing ingredients too," says Dr Chiranjeev Chabra, dermatologist and cosmetic laser surgeon, Skin Alive Clinic.

On the flip side, conservatives claim that the moisturising property of liquid cleansers makes them less effective at removing dirt and reducing body odour.

Rahul Khanna's launched new Social networking in india| Management student set launch his own social networking site

BANGALORE: Inspired by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, a 21 year old management student is on an ambitious mission to build his own social network. Rahul Khanna, a student from Mumbai, has teamed up with some of his college mates and is on his way to launch a new social networking website which will try to "fill in the gap left by existing networks."

Says Khanna, "To be honest I was inspired by Facebook. One day when we were accessing Facebook during the exam time and nothing fruitful came out..thats when I felt why don't we fill in the gap and try to take social networking to a new level."

The social networking site, socheers.com, was launched in beta mode (testing phase) about three months back. Khanna has registered a self funded company, Socheers Infotech Private Limited , along with seven others and is planning to officially launch the site in about two months from now.

The site already has more than 18,000 registered users, claims Khanna who heads marketing and strategy for the company. Khanna's site went through an incident which is strikingly similar to Facebook which managed to overwhelm the Harvard University server when it was first launched.

"After we went live, word spread fast. The shared server we rented in Australia could not cope with the incoming traffic and had to shut down all the sites hosted on the server. We are now moving to a dedicated server in Nasik," he said.

Khanna is a student of Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) university. "We have not done any promotions so far. First, we want to concentrate on the user interface and features," he said.

Besides the regular social media features like the status update and sharing, the site has features like the "jukebox" which allows you discover music your friends like and regional language chat. It also lets you upload and share documents and post videos.

"Soon a new feature which has to do with women and fashion will also be added to the site. This will be a compelling reason to be on socheers.com," said Khanna.

Serbia sends Ratko Mladic to Hague to face war crimes charges

BELGRADE: Serbia extradited most-wanted war crimes suspect Ratko Mladic on Tuesday after he lost his final legal appeal, removing a nationalist icon whose years on the run hindered Serbian progress towards EU membership.

Serbia's war crimes court rejected an appeal from his lawyer that poor health should stop the former general's extradition to the UN tribunal in The Hague, where ex-Bosnian Serb wartime political leader Radovan Karadzic is already on trial.

"Ratko Mladic has been extradited," Serbian justice minister Snezana Malovic told reporters on Tuesday evening. "That means he is in the plane en route to The Hague tribunal."

Japan tsunami's effect in the earth | Japan underestimated tsunami threat: IAEA

TOKYO: Japan underestimated the hazard posed by tsunamis to nuclear plants, the UN atomic watchdog said on Wednesday, while praising Tokyo's response to the March 11 disaster as "exemplary".

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also stressed the importance of "regulatory independence and clarity of roles", touching on the fact that Japan's nuclear watchdog is part of the ministry of trade and industry, which promotes atomic power.

Japan's magnitude 9.0 seabed quake and tsunami caused the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl 25 years ago at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, which has since leaked radiation into the air, ground and sea.

The IAEA sent an 18-member team of its own experts and specialists from 12 countries, including the United States, China, Russia and South Korea, on a fact-finding mission to Japan.

"The tsunami hazard for several sites was underestimated," said the IAEA team in the preliminary report it handed to Japan's centre-left government, ahead of a full report to be presented in Vienna later this month.

"Nuclear designers and operators should appropriately evaluate and protect against the risks of all natural hazards, and should periodically update those assessments and assessment methodologies," it said.

NEW Feature of Facebook | Share Media in Facebook | Facebook Is Developing Ways to Share Media

Facebook is developing features that will make the sharing of users’ favorite music, television shows and other media as much a part of its site as playing games or posting vacation photos.
The company is in discussions with several online music services, including the European company Spotify, to develop a tab or widget that would display a user’s most-played songs and provide an easy way for friends to hear them, two people involved in the discussions said.
Facebook wants to do the same for other kinds of media, like video and news, said these people, who spoke only on condition of anonymity because the talks are confidential.
Facebook, which has nearly 700 million users, would not comment on its plans. But analysts and media executives said the company’s move into media was part of its ambition to become a hub for all types of activities on the Internet. And as the company sees it, people increasingly define themselves through the media they consume, they said.
In a statement, Facebook said, “We’re always looking for better ways to help people discover the most relevant content on Facebook but have nothing to announce.”
With media highlighted as a permanent and highly visible part of a user’s profile page, the company hopes to replicate the success it has had in becoming a top destination for games in other forms of entertainment.
Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s chief executive, hinted at the company’s plans during a presentation at the eG8 technology conference in France this week.
“Listening to music is something that people do with their friends,” Mr. Zuckerberg said. “Music, TV, news, books — those types of things I think people just naturally do with their friends. I hope we can play a part in enabling those new companies to get built, and companies that are out there producing this great content to become more social.”
Facebook has long worked to spread its tentacles across the Web, and to persuade media companies to use its data about connections between people to make their services more “social.” In France, Mr. Zuckerberg mentioned Netflix as one of the companies that had been in talks with Facebook.
Several music services, like Spotify and Pandora, already allow users to log in with their Facebook credentials, and they personalize their sites for users based on the activities of their friends. But Facebook wants to make it easier for users to tap into those activities on its site.
According to the people involved in the negotiations, Facebook’s various media partners would each have a part in a continuous feed displaying the songs a user is listening to or the video a user is watching. Friends could then gain access to the same content with a click. By using outside partners, Facebook itself would not license any content from record companies or television networks.
Facebook is known for tinkering with products until they are ready, and the features of Facebook’s new services for music and other media could change before they are released.
The effort could pay off in a big way if Facebook succeeds in devising features that would allow its members to pay for access to third-party music services using its online currency, Credits, said David Kirkpatrick, the author of “The Facebook Effect.”
“Music could be a gold mine, just like games have been a gold mine,” Mr. Kirkpatrick said.
Reports of Facebook’s talks with Spotify have surfaced repeatedly on technology blogs, leading to speculation that Facebook would work with the service to create a music channel. But people with knowledge of Facebook’s strategy say the company never wanted to tie itself to a single music service, preferring instead to work with multiple partners.
Spotify, which is available in seven European countries, has been in talks with major record labels for distribution in the United States. It already has Facebook connections: Sean Parker, an early Facebook investor, is also an investor in Spotify.
Jim Butcher, a Spotify spokesman, said, “We’re continuously working together to make the social experience on Spotify the best it can be and welcome relationships with any company looking to innovate by building more social value into the user experience.”
Last year, Facebook negotiated with Apple about bringing social features into iTunes. But the talks broke down and Apple created its own social network within iTunes, called Ping. It has not become popular with users.

Google new Travel Search | Google Unveils New Travel Search Feature, Does Not Include ITA Features | Google new Travel Search

Google is unveiling its new flight search feature today, which makes it easier to search for flight information within Google. Notably, Google says this does not include any of the services it acquired with its controversial acquisition of ITA, the flight data search company Google bought last year and went through nine months of regulatory oversight before being approved in April. The new flight schedule search feature is relatively minor by itself. It allows users to see all the flight schedules on a route as well as to explore all the outbound destinations from an airport. Yet, this is just a step in Google's plans to take over flight scheduling data and search. What can users expect when Google finally does integrate ITA software into its travel features?

ITA's best travel search feature is called Matrix. It provides airport geo-search, event search to find things to do at your destination, an interactive calendar to explore date ranges for lowest fares, real-time filters to find the best flight for your needs and color-coded time bars. Google's newest offering does none of this and is little more than flight data on a search page. Neither has Google integrated any of ITA's mobile offerings, namely its "OnTheFly" app that is available for iOS and Android.

The theory is that Google will be able to take the ITA offerings and QPX software - with the data it harvests and the interface it provides - and display it in a Google search page. Google wants to know what users are doing so as to better push advertising and offerings such as the announcement of Google Wallet, and this revamp of its travel search offers significant insight into the online and real-world behavior of people. Google's ITA purchase was as much about the rich data the company provides (and can manipulate through Needlebase) as the richer, real-time travel search options it can provide.

Will this set it apart from Bing, which partnered with travel search engine Kayak earlier this month? Bing had been using ITA data to power its search options and joined the coalition against Google's purchase of ITA. Kayak by itself is an impressive travel search engine and the other market players - Expedia, Travelocity, Priceline, Orbitz, Optifly - all have heavy marketing campaigns and a wide base of users.

The Art Of Videogames

The artwork that goes into today’s videogames can be museum-worthy. Many game scenes look completely photorealistic, created with crisp high-end graphics; others are highly stylized cartoon-like visuals. Some games even contain scenes that are beautifully painted by hand.

To showcase these beautiful works, the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences and the Entertainment Software Association set up an art show and contest called Into the Pixel, which hopes to highlight some of the best artwork created for video games.

The 2011 show is currently featured online, but will also be showcased at the E3 Gaming Expo, which will be held from June 7 to 9 in Los Angeles. You can also see a list of the winning artwork at the Into the Pixel site, with profiles and descriptions of the artists.

get hurt is like living knowing that you

don't get hurt is like killing yourself before you die.

• I love you not because of who you are,

but because of who I am when I am with you.

• When I'm away from u, I'm still with u.

When my eyes are closed, I could still c u.

When I'm awake, I still dream of u.

When I feel I have everything, I still

need u & no matter what, I'll always luv u.

Dreaming of u makes my night worthwhile,
thinking of u just makes me smile, being with
u is the best thing ever & loving u is what I'll do forever.

To hear what is unspoken, to see what is
invisible, to feel without without even
touching... is the miracle called Love.
I knew I loved you when I realized that
there was no one else I would rather laugh,
cry and make memories with. Luv U!

Giving someone all ur luv is never an
assurance that they'll luv u back! Don't
expect luv in return; just wait for it to grow
in their hearts. But if it doesn't, be content it grew in urs.

Love is falling asleep dreaming of the one
that makes you smile and waking up smiling
about the one u dream of.
